Grove’s Teacher of the Month: Joan Johnson – Presented By Trench Brothers Graphics

There are a lot of instances in which college students change their degree path and make the decision to change what career they want to go into. Joan Johnson is one of those who had this experience and she says that it was a great choice.

“When I started college, I was a business major” Johnson recalled. “By the second semester; I quickly realized that I enjoyed my Discrete Mathematics and Business Calculus classes much more than the business courses. I changed my major and never looked back. I knew secondary education was the place for me because I enjoyed the content and I enjoyed the age group of students.”

Joan currently teaches Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and AP Calculus AB at Grove High School, but she has also taught at other schools before coming to Grove.” I started my career in Purdy, Missouri, and then I went to Woodward, Oklahoma, she said. “I took a short hiatus to have my children and be a stay-at-home mom. I returned to the classroom in Jay, Oklahoma before finally landing in Grove.”

There are a number of different things that Johnson loves about being a teacher, but she says that seeing her students’ lives impacted is really great.

“I enjoy watching students gain confidence in their own abilities over the course of the year, she stated.

“Oftentimes, students think that they are not very good at math. When actually, they just need encouragement, an extra explanation, or a real-world application of what they are learning to help them make sense of it. My classes are not just about mathematics, they are about perseverance, problem-solving, and critical thinking, which are life skills that every individual utilizes on a daily basis.”

When she is not teaching, Johnson saysshe has other ways that she enjoys spending her time.

“When I am not in my classroom, you will find me with my own children, Taylor and Christopher, Joan said. “Whether it is at the soccer or football field, proofreading an essay, having a late night chat from Stillwater, or spending quality time with them on our living room couch.”
