Jay Softball – Team Spotlight – Presented by Eyecare of Grand Lake

By Payton Moody
The Jay High School softball team is eagerly looking forward to the upcoming season with a young but promising roster.

According to Head Coach Mike Moore, the team’s goals and aspirations revolve around capitalizing on their strengths and improving their performance.

“We are a very young group with only one senior,” Moore said. “Our plan is to run the bases well and be able to manufacture runs. Pitching well and playing solid defense are key components for us. We have some tools; we just need it all to come together every day.”

During the offseason, the Lady Bulldogs have been actively preparing to elevate their game. “We have had a few scrimmages, but we are focusing on uptempo practice situations to quicken our thought process,” Moore said.

“Drill work for hitting and defensive situations will hopefully contribute to our improvement.”

Heading into the season, there are key returning players to watch out for. “Anna Eberle, our senior catcher/ third baseman, is in the lineup with good pop,” Moore said. “Makenna Moffett will be our pitcher this year, and she throws a lot of strikes, moving around the zone effectively. Kyle Howe, a versatile player who can catch and play shortstop, will lead off for us and steal a lot of bases.”

Moreover, the team is excited about the potential impact of their notable newcomer, Jovie Ward. As a freshman infielder, she is already showing great potential at the plate and will be playing multiple positions for the team.

The team’s focus will be on playing great defense and consistently manufacturing offense in every game, a strategy Moore is confident will lead his team to a successful season.

“I’m excited for this season of play,” Moore said. “It’ll be fun to watch these girls capitalize on their hard work this offseason.”

The Lady Bulldogs are poised to make their mark on the softball diamond this season, with the 2023 games already underway.
