Commerce’s Avery Durham – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Eye Care of Grand Lake

By: Hunter Ferguson

Commerce girls soccer player Avery Durham told VYPE in a recent interview that “My personal goals for this year is to help my team make it to the playoffs. Making it to the playoffs would mean a lot to me, my teammates, and especially my coaches.” She went on to say “My favorite part of being on this team are the friends I’ve made from it. They’re the most supportive and positive teammates I could ask for no matter how many mistakes I make and I’m very grateful for that.”

Durham, who also participates in both the Art and Spanish clubs, explained that “Playing soccer has taught me that I need to work hard for the goals I make for myself and how to keep my emotions in check.”

She specifically mentioned her favorite memory “when I took my very first PK. Even though I ended up missing the goal, everyone still supported me. I’m still glad they gave me that opportunity and the next time they trust me with a PK I”ll be sure to try my best to score.”

From the things she’s learned on the pitch and off Durham named her biggest inspiration and teacher as her father. Saying “He’s the most hardworking selfless person I know. He puts his family above anything else and I try to do the same with my teammates.”

It’s worth noting that she also wanted to “say thank you to all the coaches that I’ve ever played for. They’ve all taught me everything I know now and have helped me get to where I am now. I especially want to thank my high school coaches, Mr. Andrew and Mr. Medlin. They really mean a lot to me because they’ve put in so much time and effort to help me improve and have pushed me harder than anyone else has.”
