Vinita’s Dasan Willis Athlete Spotlight Presented by Goodfella’s Pizzeria

Golf is difficult. Hitting a small, hard ball with a club a few hundred yards, only to try and gently tap it into a small hole is not easy. Add spectators and it gets worse. Add other varsity players you’re competing against, as a freshman, and you have a formal for nerves and an upset stomach. But golfers are different. They know how to control those nerves. Vinita High School freshman Dasan Willis lives out that scenario every time he steps onto the course to represent VHS.

“I am in 9th grade and have been playing for almost two years. What I love most about being a student-athlete at Vinita High School is the amount of support I receive from fellow athletes, students, and from teachers,” said Willis.

This season Willis said the team continues to improve and the low scores are starting to roll in.
Our team is looking good, but we are all working daily to get our scores lower. What I love most about my teammates are that they are encouraging, they challenge me, and are becoming good friends on and off the course,” said Willis.

Going from football season in the fall to golf in the spring leaves little time for anything else.
Willis has spent time playing golf and working on his game on his own time.
“My best round of golf was at The Coves golf course, and I shot a 79 with my dad. I have worked to improve my short game, such as chipping and putting,” said Willis.

While graduating from high school may seem far away, Willis is thinking about life after high school and where he may take his talents. “My dream would be to continue playing golf at the collegiate level. I enjoy going to the range, playing a round of golf with my dad, and riding my dirt bike,” said Willis.
