Alex Snell’s football journey began as it does for many young men: watching the NFL with his dad.

“It was the Chiefs vs. Chargers, and I believe the Chiefs won. I believe it was 2015,” Snell, an Afton High School senior, said. “I instantly fell in love with the sport.”

Football has taken Snell on exactly that — a journey — in the almost decade that has passed.

“I would say the most challenging time was last season when I sprained my knee and was out for a month,” Snell said. “My friends, family, teammates, and coaching staff were all a big part of helping me recover quickly. It taught me that everything can change quickly and to not take things for granted.”

Work ethic is a major aspect of Snell’s success. The 5-9 defensive back and wide receiver is one of the team’s best returning two-way players this season.

“Alex is a great kid that works,” Afton head coach Corey Henry said. “He’s very coachable and gives his best at everything he does.”

Snell’s goals for this season are to make the playoffs and give the Eagles a shot to compete for a state championship. The Eagles last won a title in 2017.

“Another goal is to have at least 600 receiving yards,” Snell said.

Snell also runs track and is a member of Afton’s STUCO. To reach his goals, Snell has spent the offseason laboring on the field. Afton fans should be prepared to see a highly competitive team on Friday nights this fall.

“I focused on improving my route-running and getting off the line quickly, and I made good progress compared to last year,” Snell said. “They [fans] should expect a high-tempo and a well-organized defense that quickly reaches the ball carrier and shuts down the passing game.”

For his long-term goals, Snell aims as high as possible. He wants to play football professionally, to be successful and to be well traveled.
