Vinita’s James Stonebarger – Football Spotlight – Presented by Welch State Bank

James Stonebarger

Vinita High School

By Trina Walker

James Stonebarger’s dad always tells him, “Don’t love what you do, do what you love.” James takes this advice onto the field or the court where he does what he loves, play ball.

This sophomore at Vinita High School is a multi-sport athlete playing football, baseball, and basketball. “Sports have taught me to work hard and that nothing is ever given but it is earned. For me this means showing up every day and putting everything I have on the field.”

James was playing baseball when he was five and football by the time he was six or seven. He was raised around sports and has been watching them on TV for as long as he can remember.

He enjoys representing his school as a student-athlete because he remembers being the kid looking up to the high schoolers thinking they were the best. “I strive to be a good example and someone the kids can look up to. I love the competitive nature, and I enjoy being out there with my friends,” said James.

His parents have played a big part in his life. The person who most inspires James is his dad. “He came from nothing and worked hard, eventually working his way up and giving me the life I have today,” says James. “Thank you, Mom, for taking me to every activity, event, or game no matter the day or the time. You always found a way to get me from point A to point B.”

The teammate who makes the biggest impression on James is his friend Caden. “We are friends off the field, on the field, and in the weight room. We push each other. We make sure neither of us are cutting ourselves short.”

James says he has always seen himself as an underdog. This is one reason he looks up to San Francisco 49’s quarterback,Brock Purdy, who also has an underdog story. James is dedicated to his sport where he earned his position by doing what he loves.
