Jay’s Kayla Greer – Girls Basketball Spotlight – Presented by TH Lumber, Grove

Jay’s Kayla Greer

By Trina Walker

Student athletes play a big part in boosting morale and pride for their school. Being part of something bigger is what Kayla Greer enjoys most representing Jay High School as a basketball player.

Beyond learning skills needed to play the game, basketball has taught her leadership and discipline. She has also developed valuable relationships with teammates and coaches.

Kayla is a junior who plays point guard and shooting guard. “My favorite part of playing point is being able to get my team into an offense and assist them in points. My favorite part of being a shooting guard is being able to score for my team,” she said.

Hadley Goins is the teammate who has left the biggest impression on Kayla. “Hadley believed in me, respected me and mentally made basketball great for me. I am passionate about my sport because it makes me feel confident and distracts me positively,” said Kayla.

Playing summer ball was a valuable experience for Kayla. She improved her skills on the court and became more confident in her ability. “My favorite memory so far was over this summer where I gained a lot of confidence and helped lead my team to some wins,” she said.

Kayla credits her grandfather for getting her into basketball. “My grandfather inspires me because he dedicates all his time to me and believes in me. When I moved to Jay in fourth grade we had an open house. Newly Robertson was a JYSA coach, and my grandpa spoke to him. That is when I fell in love with basketball,” she says.

The best advice is to “be passionate, be confident and give all glory to God,” she says, “I first want to say thank you to the Lord for giving me pride and giving me the potential to play. Secondly, I want to say thank you to my family for supporting me throughout it all. Lastly, I want to say thank you to my friends for encouraging me and believing in me!” she exclaimed.

Kayla is involved in National Honor Society, Student Council and is also on the JHS cross country and track teams.
