It might be hard for some to believe, but the girls have been wrestling in their own division for over four years now. That includes Grove High School senior Kaybrie Sharp. Grove head coach Cameron Smith said the program continues to grow and Sharp is one of the hardest working wrestlers in the room, boys or girls.

“She puts in work all summer and offseason to improve her strength, speed, and technique. Not only is she a hard worker, but she is a great leader to the other girls on the team, always providing motivation and support in the sport of wrestling,” said Smith.

For Sharp, being part of the team and being a student-athlete at GHS is something special.

“I love the lifelong lessons that I’ve learned while being in Grove athletics,” said Sharp. “I love how much my teammates push me. My goal for this season is to be on the podium at the state tournament.”

Sharp will wrestle at 120-pounds and is ranked No. 8 at 125-pounds according to Owrestle.com. The senior is not focused on rankings, but she is focused on helping her team win and hitting her stride as tournament time approaches.

“We have a great group of athletes who encourage each other through everything and work harder than any group that I have been a part of.  We also have amazing coaches who push us daily,” said Sharp.

Coach Smith agrees and is excited to see the program grow.

“Last year we had four girls on the varsity team and this year we already have eight committed and hopefully a few more join. We also have seven on our junior high team,” said Smith.

Off the mat and in the classroom, Sharp focuses on her grades and serves as a senior class officer.

“I am a member of STUCO, Interact Club and my favorite subject is anatomy and physiology. Mrs. Pennington is my favorite teacher. I want to go to college somewhere on the coast and become a nurse practitioner, as well as a youth pastor,” said Sharp.

In her free time Sharp said she enjoys going out on the lake with friends and family.
