Miami High School senior Damiyah Smith is a member of the wrestling team and has set high goals for herself and the team this season.
“My goal for this season is to work as hard as I can and win state. I love that we all go through the same thing, we all feel the same struggles in the wrestling room, so if one of us is struggling we lift each other up and persevere through it,” said Smith. “The team has grown a lot since I first started wrestling, the growth we’ve made is amazing, not to mention the fact that we started with two girls and now we have ten.”
When Smith started her wrestling journey, the all-girls wrestling was a year away from becoming the standard for Oklahoma, but Smith did not mind wrestling against the boys.
“I started wrestling in 8th grade against boys, it wasn’t until my sophomore year that girl wrestling started to pick up,” said Smith.
As a student-athlete at MHS, Smith said she is part of several groups at school and loves representing the Wardogs in competition.
“I love it all, I love our community and coaches and I’m ready for everything my final year at Miami holds. I’m in The National Honor Society, STUCO, and Choir,” said Smith.
In the classroom, Smith said her favorite subject is English and that she loves all of her teachers. Making plans for her future is something Smith is excited to do.
“When I graduate, I plan on furthering my wrestling career in college while pursuing a career in medicine,” said Smith.
The 125-pound wrestler enjoys everything about the sport, which can be grueling at times. The amount of practice and work it takes to step onto the mat is exhausting, but Smith and her teammates have embraced the grind and are ready for the challenging season. Smith said when she’s away from the mat and school, she is usually working, but finds time for other activities. “In my time away from training I usually am working, however when I do get a spare moment, I love to just spend it with friends and family,” said Smith.
