Vinita basketball player Sara Hency spoke with VYPE in a recent interview.
VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?
One of my personal goals for the upcoming year is to become better at offense. I plan to practice regularly and work on my skills in order to improve my game. At the same time, I want to maintain good grades in school by staying organized and focused on my studies. Additionally, I aim to continue showing livestock by participating in local competitions and events.
VYPE: What is the most fun you have had in the last year?
I had a lot of enjoyable moments this past year, but the ones that stand out the most are when my family and I visited Roaring Rivers and Silver Dollar City.
VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade, and why?
My favorite teacher is my Spanish teacher, Ms. White. She always manages to put a smile on my face and I couldn’t have asked for a better teacher or supporter. Ms. White is very supportive and she shows up to every basketball game to cheer me on.
VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?
One of my most cherished basketball moments was when we won districts, advanced to Regionals, and reached the third game but lost. After the game, my teammates and I sat in the locker room and cried, despite not having lost any teammates. I believe we were crying about how much we had grown as a team over the past year, and I feel fortunate to be a part of the team.
VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?
I believe that all of my teammates have left an equal impact on me, each contributing to my personal growth in their own unique way.
VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?
I really enjoy being a part of this team because of the amazing people and the way we collaborate on the court. It’s never just one person doing everything, we all work together and play as a team.
VYPE: You can pick any place for a summer vacation. Where would you go, and who would you take with you?
If I could pick any place for a summer vacation I would go to Mackinac Island with my family.
VYPE: If we gave you $500 and you had to spend it in 24 hours what would you spend it on?
If I were to receive $500, my first priority would be to use it for anything my mom may need from the grocery store or elsewhere. After taking care of my family, I would then donate the remaining amount to a charitable cause or use it to purchase food for a help box.
VYPE: Do you participate in any community service activities?
Yes, I do community service through FFA.
VYPE: What clubs or campus groups are you involved with and why?
I’m an active member of both the FFA and Spanish Club. My passion for showing animals and participating in livestock judging led me to join FFA. As for the Spanish Club, I joined to broaden my language horizons because I believe that being multilingual is a valuable asset.
VYPE: Are you involved in academic excellence activities such as the National Honors Society, Student Council, or other academic clubs?
I am involved in the Indian Honors Society and hope to become involved in the National Honors Society when I am a junior.
