As the season gets underway, Fairland High School’s slow-pitch softball team is looking ahead to what the season could hold for a team that made the state tournament last season. Alivia Bartley was one of the players who helped make that historic run for the program. The run became one of her most memorable moments on the field.
“Last years slow-pitch season when we made it to state and went all the way to semifinals is my most memorable moment,” said Bartley. “What I love most is how we never have any drama and how we are all friends on and off the field.”
Playing defense is a strength for Bartley and she has worked to improve her hitting coming into the new season.
“I play third base. At third base you always have to be prepared for anything. It’s the hot corner so you need to have fast reaction time,” said Bartley. “My hitting has improved every year and my ability to play anywhere the coach puts me.”
The team is loaded with vocal leaders and “glue” type players who just want to succeed.
“We are all very vocal, but I think the teammate that makes me laugh the most is Rylin Reed. She always puts a smile on everyone’s faces,” Bartley said.
Having a good work ethic and working together and supporting others through the good time and bad are lessons sports have taught Bartley. She said her father is also a source of inspiration.
“My dad inspires me the most. He always takes me down to the field whenever I’m in a slump and pushes me to be better,” Bartley said.
Also a member of STUCO, National Honor Society, FCA and GT, Bartley also plays fastpitch and basketball for FHS. Her favorite class is Anatomy and Physiology, and her favorite teacher is Ms. Shaw. Away from sports Bartley said she enjoys hanging out with friends and doing arts and crafts.
“I also enjoy going to church on Wednesday nights,” Bartley said.
