Q&A With Afton’s Addisyn McElhaney – Presented by NEO Orthopedics & Rehabilitation

VYPE: What motivates you?
Addisyn: I want to be good at what I do. I’ve been cheering for ten years and I’ve put so much effort into being good with working on jumps, tumbling, making sure motions are sharp. Also seeing the looks on all the little kids’ faces at pep assemblies and having little girls come up to me and tell me how much they want to be a cheerleader when they get older.

VYPE: Who are some of your biggest influences or role models?
Addisyn: My mom has been working so hard lately getting her master’s degree and has done a great job raising me and my sister. I know we spread her thin between all the things me and my sister are in and teaching pre-k kids but she’s always there to help when we need it. My dad is the most honest hard-working person you will ever meet. There are days he’ll work from six in the morning to ten at night to help his family and make sure our bills are paid, there’s a roof over our head, and there’s food on the table. He works so hard for us but is always there.

VYPE: Who are some coaches that have impacted your athletic career?
Addisyn: Coach Corey Henry has always been there for me when I needed it and will always be there to help his students and his athletes. My freshman year cheer coach Mrs. Jenifer Osterberger is hands down one of the best cheer coaches you could ever have. She is always there for her girls and cares the most for them and I knew if I ever needed anything I could go to her for it.

VYPE: What teacher has had the biggest impact on your life?
Addisyn: Mrs. Liz Street. Math has definitely never been my strong suit and it has most definitely made an impact on how I feel about the subject and the teachers but she has spent more time than I have ever had a teacher do making sure we understand, and when we don’t understand she’ll work with us and show us different ways to do it and keep helping till we understand it.

VYPE: What has it taken to be successful in your sport?
Addisyn: I know too many people that have joined cheer and didn’t want to put in any work and they never lasted very long. I know cheer seems like an easy blow-off sport but it’s really not if you want to look nice. You have to put in effort to learn the cheers and dances and then you have to keep working on them to make them look clean and nice. Jumps are hard and if you want them to even look halfway decent you have to work on them. Same with tumbling. Your arms should hurt by the time you’re done from how sharp you are and how hard and tight you are hitting your motions. I’ve put ten years into sideline cheer and two into competition cheer and that’s a lot of hours if you put it all together and that’s a lot of time working on the same things over and over to make it look good.

VYPE: Is there an opponent that you enjoy beating the most?
Addisyn: Fairland for sure, they have always been our rivals and the games are always so fun.

VYPE: What does it mean to you to represent your school and community when you compete?
Addisyn: I love being able to represent our school. I love being the people they see when they first see Afton and love being able to make that first impression.

VYPE: Which teammate do you enjoy working against the most with in practice? Why?
Addisyn: Definitely Abby and Keilah there so nice and are always there to help
