JAY BULLDOGS

Coach: EDDIE BARNWELL

4-6

OFFENSE

In his fourth year at the helm of the Bulldog football program, head coach Eddie Barnwell is excited to have a solid group of players returning to the field this season. “We return an experienced nucleus of skill players from last year’s team. Returning Jr. RB/DB Armondo Newcomb was our leading rusher, and scorer from a year ago. QB Leland Johnson returns to direct the Bulldogs new spread offense. Ryan Taylor Jr. RB/DB returns after undergoing knee surgery after the fourth game of the season last year. We will open the new Bulldog Stadium on September 6th against Gravette [Ark.],” said Barnwell. That new stadium will be christened by running back Armondo Newcomb (5-9, 170, Jr.). After rushing for 1,355 yards as a sophomore, Newcomb wants more. Look for quarterback Leland Johnson (5-9, 155, Jr.) to find Newcomb in the run and passing games. Johnson accounted for 500 yards through the air last season. Ryan Taylor (6-0, 205, Jr.) is a versatile player who can make a difference at running back or wide receiver. Taylor had 250 yards in only three games last season. Kenon Garcia (5-9, 155, Jr.) is a two-year starter and an important piece of the puzzle for the Bulldog offense. Also look for tight end Xavier Barcenas (6-0, 210, Sr.) who is an excellent blocker and could get involved in the passing game. Trenton Brixey (6-1, 280, Sr.) may be the best offensive lineman or one of the best to ever play at Jay. Coach Barnwell speaks highly of Brixey and what he has accomplished as a player.

DEFENSE

Six starters return to the defense including Newcomb who will start in the secondary with Zach Eberle (5-9, 165, Sr.) and Garcia. Last season Newcomb recorded two pick-six TDs and is set for another great season on defense. Garcia and Eberle will play important roles in the pass-happy district as they look to shut down anything deep. Taylor joins the secondary bringing his athleticism to squad. Brixey will start on the defensive line giving the Bulldogs someone who can disrupt up front and Barcenas will start at linebacker. There are a couple of jobs to fill and after spring ball, the decisions on who grabs those spots is becoming clearer. Making his return to the team is Bradee Rutherford (Jr.) after playing baseball and basketball for the last two seasons. Rutherford is an excellent athlete and will help the Bulldogs on both sides of the ball. Wiley Robertson (Sr.) took several years off from football but has made his return as well. Robertson was big in spring ball at OLB and will likely see time on offense. Krew Culver (Sr.) is one of the hardest working players on the team and despite several setbacks, Culver is poised to make this a season to remember. The coaching staff includes Josh Cawyer, Jeff Stapleton, David Reisner, Blake Williford, Jessie Hodge, and Case Barnwell.
