Carson Schertz: Leading Fairland with Grit, Heart, and Vision

Some athletes chase records. Others chase championships. For Carson Schertz, it’s all about the journey—and who takes it with him. “To win, I wanna make it as far as we can and do it with my friends,” said the Fairland senior. “This is our last ride together, and I want to make it count.”

This offseason has brought more than just workouts—it’s created accountability. “So far, we have spent more time in the weight room pushing each other to get better,” he said. “We’re getting more kids in the weight room, and that’s huge for our program.”

According to Schertz, the shift in attitude is just as important as the physical progress. “The biggest improvement so far I’ve seen is our work ethic,” he said. “All the guys are locked in and really want it.”

Fairland isn’t setting small goals either. “Our goals are to win out and be in every game, even if we shouldn’t be,” said Schertz. “We just wanna have one last ride and make it last as long as possible.”

Depth and athleticism give this team a real edge. “Our biggest strength I would say is our skill guys,” he said. “We have two to three running backs and about six deep at the WR spot, which gives us a lot of options and depth.”

As the team’s quarterback and a safety on defense, Schertz has a big role—and the mindset to match. “I look for mismatches, I try to get my guys the ball quick and let them do their thing,” he said. “Every game is really a high touch game for me, so I treat them all the same and just stay calm and relaxed throughout.”

Whether under the Friday night lights or walking the halls, his leadership never wavers. “I just wanna be someone that was coachable, a leader and a winner,” he said. “This season isn’t just about what’s to come this year, but for the years after and for the younger kids to build on.”

Carson doesn’t have a specific pregame song—he just rolls with whatever his teammates blast. And while football is front and center right now, his favorite sports memory still goes to basketball: “Probably making it to the state semis last year.”

At 6’4”, with plans to play football or basketball in college, Schertz is focused, driven, and most of all—ready.
