Grove High School wrestling coach John Ward believes he has a solid team returning to the mat this year.
“Six state qualifiers, two state placers. Great group of young men who work hard and trying to make each other better every day,” said Ward.
One of those wrestlers returning this season is Aiden Davis. Davis is a junior this season and has wrestled since he was in the first grade. His goal this season mirrors the goal of every wrestler on the team.
“The goal is to be a state qualifier,” said Davis.
Davis plans to wrestle at 165-pounds and believes he can help the team in duals this season at that weight.
“Our team will be very solid this year and we have a good chance of winning dual state,” said Davis.
Representing Grove and the wrestling team is something Davis is very proud to do. Being a student-athlete at Grove High School is something Davis truly enjoys.
“I enjoy the coaching staff and how they want me to put my grades first,” said Davis. “We treat each other like family, and it is a very enjoyable atmosphere.”
Away from the mat, Davis said he is part of the Character Counts and Interact at school. His favorite subject is math and his favorite teach is Mrs. Alisha Smith.
Davis said after he graduates from high school, he would like to attend college and become a chiropractor. In his free time, the junior said he likes to work on his baseball skills to improve for the baseball team and he enjoys relaxing at home.
Davis is joined on the mat by several underclassmen and one senior who made it to state last season. Those teammates include Josh Gesell (Sr.), Laird Thompson (Jr.), Deringer Hollenbeck (Jr.), Ezra Gates (Jr.), Jase Hanna (Jr.), and Brysen Hoodenpyle (So.). Last season at the state tournament, Grove finished 13th in points, but as wrestlers like Davis continue to develop into wrestlers who can consistently place in tournaments and win their matches in duals, Grove will begin the climb towards the top of the list.
