Derringer Hollenbeck, an exceptional athlete from Grove High School, embodies the true spirit of determination and resilience. Derringer, a VYPE Unsung Hero Nominee, has left an indelible mark on both the football field and wrestling mat at Grove High School. Despite facing challenges, he has risen above and earned the respect and admiration of his coaches and teammates alike.

Derringer may not be the biggest, fastest or strongest player, but he possesses an unwavering determination that sets him apart. “He is a gritty player who lost most of last year with a hamstring injury,” Head Football Coach Ron Culwell said. “He is ready to go this year after a trip to the state wrestling tournament.”

Support and camaraderie from teammates have been a pillar of strength for Hollenbeck. He expressed admiration for Emmanuel and Carson, two teammates who exemplified outstanding leadership qualities and served as a source of inspiration for him.

Reflecting on his academic journey, Hollenbeck highlighted the pivotal role played by his sixth-grade teacher, Ms. Benge. “She made learning so fun and made me love science and math, which is partly why I want to be an engineer,” he said.

Both football and wrestling have instilled valuable life lessons in Hollenbeck. “My sports have taught me that sometimes your situation isn’t going to be ideal, but that’s not an excuse to give up,” he said.

As the off-season rolled in, Hollenbeck set ambitious goals for himself. “I set a goal to weigh 170 pounds by the beginning of football, which is 25 pounds heavier than I was last year,” he said. “So I’m definitely lifting and eating a lot.”

Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Hollenbeck has both individual and team goals in mind. “Team-wise, we obviously want to go undefeated and play so well that people can’t overlook us anymore,” he said, setting the bar high for his team’s success. Personally, he aims to enjoy the journey and have fun in the process.

Beyond high school, Hollenbeck envisions a future in college wrestling while pursuing his passion for engineering.
