Jay Bulldogs – 2023 Football Team Preview – Presented by TH Rogers Lumber Grove

JAY BULLDOGS

Coach: EDDIE BARNWELL

4-6

OFFENSE

Jay head football coach Eddie Barnwell is in his third season leading the Bulldogs. As they prepare for the upcoming season, Barnwell says that he likes the makeup of his team, and he is looking forward to the upcoming season. “We return a good nucleus from a 4-6 team a year ago,” he said. “We return six starters on each side of the ball. Four of those positions were occupied by freshmen. We feel like we made great strides last year and are looking forward to the upcoming season.” One of those returners is full-back Luke Black (6-3, 250, Sr.), who had over 1,000 rushing yards last season. Joining Black in the backfield is the halfback duo of Armondo Newcomb (5-9, 165, So.) and Ryan Taylor (6-0, 175, So.). Working to keep the defense from getting to the ball will be offensive linemen Kannon Scott (6-0, 220, Sr.) and Trenton Brixey (6-0, 245, Jr.). A player that will be looking to make an impact on the outside as a wide receiver is Kenon Garcia (5-9, 140, So.)

DEFENSE

On the defensive side of the ball, the Bulldogs have a good amount of returners that Barnwell knows will be an asset to his team. “We try to be as multiple and physical as we can be,” he said. “We return both inside linebackers, as well as seasoned defensive backs that give us a better chance of being successful.” Linebackers Conner Gough (5-10, 200, Sr.), Brody Thomas (5-9, 175, Sr.), and Justus Nava (6-0, 205, Sr.) have put in a lot of time in the offseason and are ready to shut down their opponents. Leland Johnson (5-10, 150, So.) will use his skill and prowess to keep opposing receivers at bay.
