Miami High School junior Mercedes Estep has been a member of the varsity cheer squad for three years. As a team member, Estep said she has enjoyed everything about being a student-athlete at Miami High School.
“What I love most about my team and teammates is I love how well get work together, especially during competition season,” said Estep.
Their hard work has paid off and the squad continues to grow and improve with every season. For Estep, competing in competition is what makes all of the hard work the team goes through during the school year and summer worth it.
“My favorite memory during competition is when we just got done preforming and me and my best friend Maddison look at each other and smile because we hit everything and didn’t mess up,” said Estep.
The junior is only focused on cheer and academics. Estep said she puts a priority on her academics and her future.
“My grades are so important so I can get into a good college. After I graduate, I plan on going to NEO to get my basics and really decide what I want to do as a career,” said Estep.
In the classroom, Estep said she enjoys all her classes, but she does have a favorite.
“My favorite subject is English. My favorite teacher is Mr. Adams because he will help you one on one just to make sure you understand what you’re learning,” said Estep.
Estep said her father has been a big reason she has been successful in and out of the classroom.
“My father has been a big influence in my life because he motivates me to keep trying and doing my best at everything,” said Estep.
In her free time, Estep said she enjoys reading.
