For Zaden Nowlin, this season isn’t just about stats—it’s about setting a tone. The Vinita senior is all-in on leading by example and chasing greatness every time he steps on the field. “My personal goals heading into this season [are to] achieve 500+ receiving yards, make some 45-yard field goals, and be a team leader—someone the underclassmen can look up to,” Zaden said.
He’s not alone in his effort. The entire Hornet program has taken a new level of commitment this offseason. “The team this year has prepared very differently from last year,” he said. “Everyone is showing up and having fun, but also when it’s time to work, we work. We don’t mess around, and we are 110% focused all the time.”
That mindset has created real progress. “The biggest improvement I’ve seen so far is everyone showing up and paying attention—learning all the offensive plays and defensive formations and coverage,” he said. “We’re getting sharper, and everyone wants to be ready.”
Team goals? They’re ambitious but attainable with the right energy. “Some of the team’s goals this season is [to] be in the best shape we can be, so we are not gassed by the fourth quarter,” Zaden said. “Perfecting every route and defensive formation so it becomes second nature. And asking questions when we don’t know something—that’s huge.”
Zaden lines up at outside receiver, corner, and kicker, but his preparation is just as important as his position. “Physically, I prepare myself by taking care of my body that week,” he said. “In practice I’m going 100% full attention—not slacking off, hydrating all week.”
He studies opponents closely, using film and body language as a guide. “What I look for when reading a defense is what we went over on film,” he said. “Or how the receivers come off the ball… if they don’t seem very into the play, it’s probably a run.”
As for his mindset? “Offensively, I want to make sure we get to the end zone every time. Defensively, I want to make sure we get that stop. Every 50/50 ball—we got to go get it.”
Zaden’s message is clear: “I want my legacy to be he never gave up, always played hard, and encouraged his team.”
