Vinita High School’s varsity basketball player Malachi Namelo prides himself on being the kind of teammate who brings people together and lifts others up, whether the Hornets are in the middle of a tight game or just joking around after practice.
Namelo said the best part of basketball at Vinita is the relationships that form in the locker room, on the bus and during long practices. “I love the bonds and friendships we’re able to create on and off the court,” Namelo said. He describes his top strength as his ability to encourage teammates and keep their energy high, no matter the score.
The versatile Hornets standout does not claim a single position, instead embracing the challenge of filling any role coaches ask of him. “I play wherever my coach puts me,” Namelo said, adding that the toughest part is remembering all the plays from different spots on the floor. That flexibility has helped Vinita adjust lineups and matchups throughout the 2024-25 season.
Namelo points to his mom as his biggest motivation, saying she is the reason he strives to succeed in the classroom and on the court. “I would say my mom because I know she wants me to succeed, so why not do it for her,” he said. He is also involved in FCA and attends Northeast Tech, balancing basketball with academics and faith-based activities.
When asked for a favorite memory, Namelo does not pick a single play or win, instead choosing “any moment with our 2024-2025 team.” Around the program, he credits teammates such as A.J. Haire and Zaden Nowlin as the most vocal leaders, while calling Brysen Meador the one who keeps everyone laughing.
Away from basketball, Namelo enjoys 7th hour golf and lists coach Hicks, coach Neil and Mr. Payne in a three-way tie as his favorite teachers. He spends free time working and hanging out with friends, lessons from basketball helping him “overcome obstacles and fight through adversity” in every area of life.
