They say wrestlers are a different breed. To subject themselves to the tough workouts, weight cuts and grueling matches is to some…nuts. However, there is something about the one-on-one battle that takes place in every match. You learn who you are in those moments. Vinita High School Sean Mahoney is a senior this year and has wrestled since the 7th grade.
“I think the team is coming along great this year and our coach will be proud. The thing I love most about my teammates is that they’re really supportive win or lose in a match, they’ll always tell you want you did right or wrong,” said Mahoney.
Representing Vinita High School is something Mahoney is proud to do. This season he will likely wrestle at 175-pounds.
“The thing I love most about being a student-athlete at Vinita is the group mentality with all the kids and coaches that really brings the team together,” said Mahoney.
The goal for this season is to make it to the state tournament, which is held every year at the Big House in Oklahoma City. For this senior, becoming a state qualifier and possibly finding his way to the podium would be a great way to finish his career.
“My goal for the season is to qualify for state, and if I do place in it,” said Mahoney.
Mahoney works hard in the classroom as well. He is a member of the German Club and said his favorite subject is history.
“My favorite subject in school is history, even though I don’t have a history this year, last year I took AP American History class and even though the work was a little tedious sometimes, I really enjoyed it. My favorite teacher would have to be Mrs. Stecklein, she was a perfect German and perfect English teacher and I’m so glad I could be a part of her class,” said Mahoney.
After graduation the senior will ship out for U.S. Army basic training and eventually become a 31b or Military Policeman. His family is proud of his commitment. In his spare time you can find Mahoney hiking and spending time outdoors or playing one of his favorite games on his PC.
