Q&A with Grove’s Allie Hesselman – Cross Country Spotlight – Presented by Comforting Hands Hospice

 Allie Hasselman

Grove High School

VYPE: Allie, how is the season going for you and your teammates at GHS?

Allie Hasselman: The Grove cross country team lost a lot of key seniors from last year. So, we are rebuilding as a team, but I’m sure it will be competitive at the meets like always.

VYPE: Tell me your favorite moment competing for Grove?

AH: My favorite moment as a student-athlete at GHS was when my 4×800 relay team won first place at the State track meet.  We all worked very hard throughout the season to achieve this. We all ran cross country together too.

VYPE: Do you have a favorite subject or favorite teacher?

AH: My favorite subject in school is English, and I like all of my teachers.

VYPE: Why is GHS a great place to be a student-athlete?

AH: GHS is a great place to be a student-athlete because of my teammates and coaches. I’m also able to play multiple sports, unlike most larger schools, which is a good thing as I’m not sure I would be able to choose only one.

VYPE: Is there a place you love to play?

AH: I don’t have a favorite place to compete, but in cross country, I appreciate a nice flat course.

VYPE: Who on the team keeps everyone laughing and who is the most serious?

AH: The teammate that keeps everyone laughing is Mya and I am probably one of the most serious ones.

VYPE: How do you prepare for competition?

AH: I prepare for competition mentally by praying for God to give me strength and no matter what happens his name be lifted high. When I’m running in a race my mind goes blank and all I’m thinking about is the race (and God).

VYPE: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

AH: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his Righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Mathew 6:33)

VYPE: What’s your goal for life after high school?

AH: My goal in life after high school is to glorify God and fulfill the calling he has on my life, whether that involves sports or not.
