The starting quarterback for the Miami Wardogs, Sam Lillard put up impressive numbers last season as a junior. Lillard threw for 1,119 yards on 71 completions with 11 touchdowns to only three interceptions. Lillard added 463 yards rushing with four touchdowns on the ground.
Lillard started his football career in middle school.
“I started playing football in 7th grade and knew the sport was for me when I started at quarterback in 8th grade. What I enjoy most about football is the camaraderie and the lessons it brings,” said Lillard.
The Wardogs have worked hard this spring and summer and according to Lillard there are plenty of things to be excited about.
“Some positives I saw in summer ball was the work ethic and overall attendance was better than we have had in past years. My teammates at Miami are my brothers in the foxhole, everyone fights for each other on and off the gridiron,” said Lillard.
While football is the focus, Lillard also plays baseball for the Wardogs.
“I also play baseball where I am a shortstop which helps me with the different variables that go into throwing a football, I believe that playing other sports helps me with the pressure that comes with being a quarterback,” said Lillard.
Lillard said being a student-athlete at MHS means you have the support of the staff, faculty, and fans.
“Miami is great for student-athletes because the teachers are very supportive and know how to schedule work around our personal and sports lives.”
During his time off, Lillard has worked on his throwing mechanics in preparation for the coming season. From playing golf with his friends to spending time with his girlfriend, Lillard said he’s had a great summer.
“The most fun I had this summer was competing with teammates in Little Rock 7v7. The plan is to play college football at a high level and then go into business with my mom,” said Lillard.
The senior said he looks to his father for inspiration.
“My Dad has always been an inspiration to me and pushes me to be a better player and a better man.”
