Carter Johnston is just a freshman, but he is already finding his place on the Ketchum High School varsity football team. Johnston, a middle linebacker, brings a physical style of play inspired by former NFL standout Kam Chancellor. “He was my favorite when I was younger, and he would hit really hard,” Johnston said.
Adjusting to the high school level has been a learning experience. Johnston said the transition has been challenging, but he has leaned on teammates and family to grow into his role.
“This was tough as a freshman — not having a lot of experience with the high school team,” Johnston said. “But I have an older brother who is our quarterback, and I was able to travel to last season’s games with them, so I am excited to be a part of the high school team and help where I can.”
That connection has helped him feel more comfortable as he develops alongside a veteran group.
“I have a lot of upperclassmen to learn from,” Johnston said.
On the field, Johnston embraces the responsibility of his position, even as it presents challenges.
“I play middle linebacker, and the hardest part is making the right read through traffic,” he said.
Despite his youth, Johnston already has a standout memory: scoring four touchdowns in a single game, a performance that showcased his playmaking ability.
While football has provided exciting moments, it has also delivered sobering ones. Johnston recalled one of the most intense experiences he has witnessed during a game.
“The craziest and scariest moment was when a teammate got knocked out and had to be life flighted,” he said.
Off the field, Johnston enjoys fishing and values time to relax and reset. Before games, he focuses mentally by listening to music. What keeps him motivated is the bond he shares with his teammates.
“Getting to play a sport that I love with teammates that have the same mentality as me,” he said, “that’s what I enjoy most.”
Through football, Johnston said he is learning lessons that extend beyond the game.
“It’s taught me how to work through adversity,” he said.
