When Sutton Smith of Miami High School first started competing in cross country as a seventh grader, he had no idea if it would take him to the varsity level in high school. His passion for the sport continued to grow and now he is a member of the varsity team.
“The thing I love most about my team and teammates is how we go out and give 100 percent at our meets and practices no matter what the situation is,” Smith said.
Smith finds inspiration in those he is closest to and said his faith plays an important role in mindset when competing.
“My Dad, brother, and Jesus inspire me because they have shown me what it means to give your all in every area of your life, no matter what,” Smith said.
Also a member of Student Council, National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Smith said two former teammates left a real impression on him as teammates.
“Remi Hopping and Kevin Ramirez have left a big impression on me by showing how to keep cross country fun.
During competition, Smith said he keeps his mind on the race and what his opponents are doing behind him.
“The main thing I think about during competitions is not getting passed by the guy behind me, and the faster I run, the faster I get to go home,” Smith said.
As a student, Smith enjoys math class the most and said his favorite teacher in Mr. Adams because of how enjoyable he makes the class. After graduation, Smith wants to attend college and pursue a degree.
“After I graduate, I plan to attend Oklahoma State University and pursue a degree in finance,” Smith said.
In his free time, you can usually find Smith playing golf or hanging out with his friends.
