Basketball has always been a huge part of Grove High School senior Avery Petty’s life. What started out as just something fun to do as a kid, has turned into a passion that’s stuck with him for 13 years. From long practices and night games, the sport has played a big role in shaping who he is today. He’s become a hard worker and keeps things balanced on and off the court
Avery’s love for the game began when he was young, watching his dad play at the church on the hill and in Kenwood.
“I fell in love with basketball watching my dad play,” he said. “I just wanted to be like him.”
Now, years later, that same encouragement continues to guide him. As a small forward, Avery enjoys being a versatile player. He is able to handle the ball but is also strong enough to play inside when needed.
“I like being able to be both a guard and a post,” he explained.
He describes himself as a “two-way player,” someone who shows up in both offense and defense.
“I can step out and shoot or get to the rim,” Avery said.
Over the years, he’s wanted to become a more well-rounded player, especially improving his ability to score from all three levels. One of his favorite memories came during his freshman year when he played a big role on the varsity team. This experience boosted his confidence early on. Before games, Avery has an easygoing routine.
“I just try to stay relaxed, listen to music, and not get overly nervous,” he said.
Off the court, schoolwork remains a top priority. With his mom being a teacher, education has always come first.
“I try to get as much done in class, so I have less to do after practice,” Avery shared.
His favorite subject is math, something that’s always come easy to him. Avery acknowledges his teachers and coaches for constantly pushing him to be his best. His coaches will guard him during practices, and teachers will help him understand an assignment until he gets it. He has great advice for young athletes, “Stay on top of your grades early and don’t be scared to fail. Everyone fails, it’s about staying confident and working through it.”
