Grove’s Rowan Geer – Basketball Spotlight – Presented by Rancho Viejo Mexican Restaurant

By Ivy Knapp

Rowan Geer has been around basketball for a long period of her life. Now a senior, she’s been playing the game for 13 years. Basketball has become a part of who she is. Rowan has grown up with a dad who coached basketball, so the sport was always close to home.

“I was always in the gym watching him coach,” Rowan said. “That’s what really got me interested. I wanted to be part of it, too.”

Today, Rowan plays forward, a position she loves because of the diversity it brings. Her style of play reflects her strengths of being adaptable on the court.

“I enjoy the versatility that comes with it,” she explained. “Being able to step out and shoot or post up inside makes the game fun. You get to do a little bit of everything.”

What stands out most to Rowan is the people.

“My favorite part about being on my team is our love for one another,” she said. “Everyone genuinely enjoys being around each other and having fun. We push each other, but we also laugh a lot.”

That sense of family has become even more meaningful this season after Rowan suffered an ACL tear.

“Seeing my teammates come together and persevere after that was my favorite thing to watch,” she shared. “It showed how much heart they have.”

Before every game, the team makes time to eat together. This simple tradition helps them relax and bond together. Rowan says it’s moments like those that keep the team grounded and focused. Her sisters have also been a big influence, motivating her to be her best both on and off the court.

Over the years, basketball has taught Rowan the value of teamwork and effort.

“Those two things can take you a long way,” she said. Her goals for the rest of the season are to keep improving, have fun, and make it a memorable year with her teammates. “We just want to push each other and get better,” she shared.

What Rowan enjoys most about her coach and teammates goes beyond basketball.

“I’ve been very fortunate to have a relationship with them outside of the game,” she said. “We have fun together, and that makes everything better.”

When faced with tough games or losses, Rowan focuses on the future instead of the past.

“I don’t get caught up in the previous game. I just try to prepare and get better for the next one.”

After high school, Rowan plans to continue her basketball journey at Harding University, where she’ll play for the next four years. She is looking forward to taking her love of the game to the next step.
