Vinita’s Zaden Nowlin
By Elizabeth Contreras
For senior Zaden Nowlin, basketball became a part of life more than a decade ago through a common interest between father and son. From the early days of dribbling in the driveway, basketball has positively impacted his character and his approach to life. Now wrapping up his final season with the Vinita Hornets, Nowlin is driven towards leading his team and leaving behind an example of resilience.
Nowlin has embraced his role as both a vocal and example-driven leader, with teammates looking to him not only for defense and intensity, but also guidance and encouragement. For him, leadership is about consistency, showing up, working hard, and making sure everyone around him does the same.
“Being a good leader means a lot to me,” Nowlin shared. “Helping the underclassmen with things they struggle with, and keeping the team motivated even after losses.”
His ability to lead effectively is strengthened by the team’s strong chemistry. The Hornets have a connection assembled through time and trust, often communicating without words, relying on instinct and understanding to stay coordinated on the court.
“I think what makes our team special is our chemistry,” Nowlin added. “We know where everyone is going to be without talking.”
This assumed understanding allows the Hornets to move as one unit, blending talent and teamwork into a seamless effort that carries them through the season. His deep-rooted sense of responsibility is what drives his goals for the season.
“Goals I have for myself for this season are to lead the team and be very disciplined on offense,” he said.
These goals reflect his commitment to his teammates and the culture he hopes to build.
Nowlin works progressively towards improvement, whether it’s getting extra shots up after a loss or pushing through early morning workouts. His discipline reflects the belief that growth happens with no one is watching.
Before games, Nowlin prepares mentally by listening to music and getting in the right mindset. His emphasis on and dedication towards to improvement keep him sharp for every matchup.
Academically, Nowlin focuses on managing his time wisely, completing as much homework as possible during class. By staying disciplined with his studies, he makes sure his free time can be fully and unapologetically devoted to his craft.
While his future plans are still undecided, Nowlin is determined to finish strong with the Hornets, leaving an impression on his teammates and setting an example of leadership and dedication.
