Competitive energy and teamwork are two aspects of basketball that drew Rhyan Long to the sport. She is a competitive person who thrives on the opportunity to win every game.
Long is a sophomore at Miami High School. She looks forward to each new year competing with her team. The relationships built with teammates and coaches today create an environment where they can rely on each other and help one another grow as a team.
“I am passionate about basketball because it challenges me to constantly improve and gives me confidence while being a part of something bigger than myself. Seeing players like Paige Bueckers, as well as people from small towns like mine, succeed motivates me to keep pushing toward my goals and dreams,” she said.
Long also recognizes the skills of a teammate who leaves a big impression on her.
“Aizlyn Alsbury and I have played many sports together but watching her step into basketball this year and grow into a force has been incredible. Her work ethic and drive make her exactly the kind of teammate I want to play with,” she said.
Through her sport, Long has learned discipline, resilience and focus. With these skills she can work through the challenges and pressures of daily life.
“I love representing Miami High School in a way that shows we are respectful. Getting to do that through the sport I love makes it even more fun,” she says, recalling a game against a rival team. “My favorite memory is last year when we beat Grove, because beating the Ridgerunners is always fun.”
She is thankful to her parents and family members who have been there supporting her along the way.
“My mom inspires me every day, so I strive to always make her proud and she has my back through all the ups and downs. She always tells me to ‘find the dog and be a goldfish.’ When I make a mistake, the only thing that matters is how I approach the next play,” Long said.
Long spends most of her time in the gym, but when not shooting hoops, she also loves playing soccer. Another fun hobby she enjoys is building LEGO sets, not just ordinary sets but big LEGO sets.
After high school, Long wants to go to college, play basketball and study criminal justice.
