Miami’s Lexie Gilmartin – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Welch State Bank

Miami High School junior defender Lexie Gilmartin understands that one misstep can change a match. As the varsity soccer team’s right back, she embraces a role where every decision carries weight and every mistake can end up in the back of the net.

“I play right-back, the most difficult part about my position is that one mistake could lead to the other team scoring a goal,” Gilmartin said. “Athletics has taught me the importance of teamwork and dedication. It also has taught me how to be a leader.”

Gilmartin said that leadership starts with the tone her team sets every day. She points to the supportive culture within Miami’s program as a key reason she enjoys the sport as much as the competition. “What I love most about my team is the positive atmosphere everyone brings out on the field,” she said.

That positive mindset is reinforced at home. Gilmartin credits her parents for pushing her to keep improving, even when practices are long, and games are demanding. “I am inspired by my parents because they motivate me to work hard every day and do my best even when it gets difficult,” she said.

Heading into the new season, Gilmartin said she has focused on becoming physically and mentally tougher on the back line. “Going into the new season I have improved in my confidence and strength,” she said. That growth, she added, helps her handle the pressure that comes with defending dangerous attackers in key moments.

Her favorite memory so far came away from home, when Miami traveled to the Noble Tournament. “My favorite moment was going to the Noble Tournament with my group of girls,” Gilmartin said. “I would say the most vocal teammate is Carli Beckwith and the funniest is Rhyan Long.”

Gilmartin balances her athletic commitments with a busy academic and extracurricular schedule. Her favorite subject is science, and she names Miami teacher Mrs. McGhee as her favorite. She is also involved in cheer, National Honor Society, Student Council and the Interact Club.

When she does find free time, Gilmartin said she prefers to slow down and reconnect with the people closest to her. “In my free time I like to spend time with my friends and family,” she said.
