Vinita’s Cadence Carter – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Patrick Kauffman – Shelter Insurance

Wrestling is a tough sport. A fact not lost on the participants who spend countless hours drilling and conditioning. Vinita’s Cadence Carter said the sport has taught her lessons she will carry with her for the rest of her life.

“I’ve learned that not everything goes your way, but life goes on regardless. There will always be ups and downs, and how you respond is what matters,” said Carter. “Wrestling is unforgiving. It tests your body, your discipline, and your mentality every single time you step on the mat.”

Something she loves about her team at VHS are the teammates and their focus on the sport.

“I love that it’s simple. No drama, just wrestling,” said Carter. “They’re all vocal in their own way, always lifting me up, and constantly making me laugh, especially when things get tough.”

Coming into the new season, Carter has worked on the mental side of the sport.

“I’ve grown a lot in my mental game and learned how to stay focused, confident, and more composed on the mat,” Carter said.

On the mat, Carter has made some great memories. Some stand out more than others.

“One of my favorite memories was when I qualified for state as a freshman despite having my nose broken my first match at regionals. It was a moment that made all the hard work and pain worth it,” Carter said.

Also involved in softball, FCA, STUCO, Athlete Leadership and working as a team manager for the football team, Carter stays busy. She also loves history.

“History is my favorite subject because I love learning from the past and understanding how it shapes the world today and my favorite teacher was Mrs. Phillips she taught me in 4th grade, she spoiled me a little bit and her classroom was always so much fun,” Carter said.

A source of inspiration comes from someone she’s close to.

“My Uncle Beeper. He’s the reason I ever stepped into a wrestling room. He’s taught me countless life lessons, both on and off the mat, while coaching me along the way. He’s never afraid to hurt my feelings and with this sport that’s very important,” Carter said.

In her free time, Carter plays sports. When she’s not wrestling you can find her on the softball field.
