Grove’s Dustin Keller – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by TH Lumber

On the infield dirt at Grove High School, Dustin Keller knows the weight of expectation that comes with playing shortstop for the Ridgerunners varsity baseball team.

“I play shortstop, and I think the hardest thing about my position is kind of knowing you’re expected to make a tough play and knowing the count when the other team’s hitting because I just forget,” Keller said.

But forgetting the count hasn’t stopped the Grove standout from excelling where it matters most. Keller prides himself on his defensive prowess, describing it as the cornerstone of his game.

“The strength of my game is my glove,” he said. “Playing in the field is where I’m best. I love it and enjoy it every second of making plays on the field.”

At the plate, the leadoff hitter acknowledges room for growth. His focus remains on simplification — avoiding the temptation to overswing and staying within himself in crucial at-bats.

For Keller, representing Grove extends beyond individual statistics. The opportunity to wear the Ridgerunners uniform carries profound significance.

“Representing Grove is special to me because I get to show out not just for myself but for my team and the school I go to,” Keller said. “It’s a privilege to be able to do that and be trusted by so many people to do a job on the field.”

That team-first mentality permeates the Ridgerunners clubhouse, where camaraderie fuels competitive success.

“What I love most about our team is the love we have for each other and the way we also have a good mentality going into games,” Keller said. “We trust each other in tough situations.”

Off the field, Keller finds inspiration in coach Bohannon, someone who understands his journey both athletically and personally.

“He’s been in similar situations I have been in, and he really always knows what to do,” Keller said. “He doesn’t just care about the sport. He cares about how we’re doing outside of baseball, and I appreciate it.”
