Vinita’s Zaden Nowlin – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Patrick Kauffman / Shelter Insurance

For Zaden Nowlin, playing point guard isn’t just about scoring. It’s about seeing the game before it happens.

“I play point guard on the Vinita Hornets basketball team,” Nowlin said. “I think the hardest part of playing that position is being able to read the court and know what and when someone is going to do something.”

That court vision has made Nowlin an essential piece for Vinita High School’s varsity basketball program. The multi-sport athlete, who also competes in football and golf, has embraced the leadership role that comes with running the offense.

“I think the most vocal on the team is me and the one who keeps everyone laughing is Malachi Namelo,” Nowlin said.

His leadership extends beyond barking plays and directing traffic. Nowlin credits his teammates for creating a culture of support that lifts everyone during difficult moments.

“What I love most about my teammates are how they are always there for everyone and keep everyone going when anyone is down or not doing well in the sport,” he said.

Behind his success stands his father, who taught him the fundamentals and instilled a relentless work ethic.

“The person that inspired me the most is my dad,” Nowlin said. “He has always been there for me, taught me everything I know about sports and pushes me to my best.”

Nowlin also expressed gratitude for coach Tony Roach, whose demanding approach shaped his development.

“I will give a huge thank you to Coach Tony Roach who has pushed me extremely hard and I wouldn’t be where I am today without him,” Nowlin said.
