Fairland High School varsity softball player Katelyn Flud brings experience, confidence and a positive approach to the Lady Owls’ lineup. Flud has played softball for nearly 14 years, developing into a dependable third baseman and hitter. At the hot corner, she must be prepared for nearly every situation, from charging a bunt to handling a sharply hit ball.
“I play third base. It’s pretty difficult because it’s a very challenging corner of the field because you have to worry about charging bunts or getting a hard ball hit to you,” Flud said.
While the position demands quick reactions and toughness, Flud also sees hitting as one of her greatest strengths. She continues to focus on making harder, more consistent contact at the plate.
“My strength is my hitting. I’m working on hitting more line drives and hard ground balls,” Flud said.
The Fairland team’s close connections help create an encouraging environment. Many of the players have shared classrooms and experiences for years, giving the Lady Owls a strong foundation beyond the field.
“A majority of us on the team have gone to school together the past few years and have become very close,” Flud said.
Flud credits her mother as a major source of inspiration throughout her softball career.
“My mom inspires me. She’s always comes to my games and supports me no matter what, she’s watched me play since I was little and has always pushed me to get better and never give up,” Flud said.
She also values the encouragement she received from Gracin Riggs, especially during difficult moments in games.
“Gracin Riggs left an impression on me, she always talked to me and helped encourage me when I got in my head at games,” Flud said.
Outside softball, Flud plays basketball and participates in Student Council and FCCLA. After graduation, she plans to attend college and pursue a registered nursing degree. Her advice for teammates is simple: “To have fun and stay positive.”
