As a senior varsity cheerleader at Afton High School, Kayley Wilmoth is preparing to make the most of her final year supporting the Lady Eagles from the sidelines.
Wilmoth serves as both a flyer and cheer captain, roles that require confidence, communication and a willingness to help set the tone for the squad. While flying is her biggest strength, she also recognizes an area where she hopes to grow.
“Definitely flying is my strength and something that I’m going to work on is being louder with my cheering,” Wilmoth said.
For Wilmoth, the people around her are what make cheerleading meaningful. She values the connection the team has built while practicing, learning routines and performing together.
“I love my team because we all get along so well, and we have fun together,” Wilmoth said.
She especially enjoys the process of developing new skills alongside her teammates.
“I am a flyer and cheer captain and what I enjoy most about being on the team is getting to learn new cheers and Learn new stunts with everybody,” Wilmoth said.
This season carries added significance as Wilmoth takes the floor and sidelines with longtime friends for the last time. She is looking forward to cheering at both football and basketball events throughout the school year.
“I am excited to get to cheer one last time with all my friends and get to cheer for football and basketball,” Wilmoth said.
Outside of cheer, Wilmoth remains active as a softball player and powerlifter while also participating in Student Council. Her parents have helped shape the work ethic she brings to each activity.
“The person who inspires me is probably my mom or dad because they work so hard for everything they have and so it makes me want to work hard for everything I want to have,” Wilmoth said.
After graduation, Wilmoth plans to attend college and pursue a career in nursing.
