Miami’s Cody Barnett-Athlete Spotlight-Presented by Welch State Bank

Miami High School senior Cody Barnett brings a sharp football mind and a team-first approach to the Wardogs’ varsity defense.

Barnett plays cornerback, a position that requires him to quickly read opposing offenses while matching the movements of receivers. He said play recognition is one of his greatest strengths, although he continues to focus on improving another important part of his game.

“My strength on the field is my play recognition, but I am working on my footwork,” Barnett said.

Playing cornerback presents a unique challenge, especially when a defender must react without knowing exactly where the play is headed.

“I play cornerback on defense and the most difficult thing about it is running the route backwards and just guessing what the receiver will do,” Barnett said.

For Barnett, the strongest part of being a Wardog is the support teammates provide each other. That sense of connection helps shape the atmosphere around the program as Miami prepares for a season featuring a coaching staff and approach that have caught Barnett’s attention.

“What I love most about this team is that we are there for each other,” Barnett said.

“I’m excited for the coaches and the different play style,” Barnett said.

Barnett also draws motivation from his parents and their outlook on life.

“My parents inspire me because they have been through so much in life and still live it with a positive attitude,” Barnett said.

After experiencing the disappointment of last season, Barnett has a simple takeaway that can fuel Miami’s effort moving forward.

“Something I learned last year is losing sucks,” Barnett said.

Outside football, Barnett runs track and participates in Interact Club. He said teammate Zander Clark has stood out because of his perseverance, describing Clark’s “no quit attitude.” Barnett also has his sights set on continuing his education at the University of Texas.
