Between the posts, Aizlyn Alsbury faces pressure that would rattle most high school athletes. One mistake, one missed save, and the game can slip away.
But the Miami High School varsity soccer goalkeeper has learned to thrive under that weight.
“The hardest thing about playing this position is the several stressful moments where it comes down to my ability keeping us in the game,” Alsbury said.
That mental toughness doesn’t come from nowhere. Alsbury credits her family, particularly her younger brother Landen, for pushing her to excel.
“He is an outstanding athlete and has such a huge work ethic at a young age, which pushes me to stay leading all of my brothers by example,” she said. “My mom and dad also inspire both of us immensely, constantly pushing us to be our best, always being there to watch us no matter how far the game may be.”
While Alsbury shoulders significant responsibility on the field, she finds balance in the relationships she’s built with her teammates. The camaraderie extends beyond competitive matches into everyday practice sessions.
“What I love most about my team at Miami is the relationships we have with each other,” Alsbury said. “Simple practices are so much fun just because we are there together.”
Among her teammates, Rhyan Long stands out as the most vocal leader, while Carli Beckwith keeps the team’s spirits high with her humor.
Off the field, Alsbury excels in mathematics and finds guidance from Coach K (Henry), who she describes as always encouraging her “to be my best in any situation.”
When she’s not guarding the net or hitting the books, Alsbury works part-time and enjoys visiting Seven Brew with friends.
The lessons learned between the goalposts extend far beyond the soccer field for Alsbury. Athletics has taught her how to collaborate under pressure and the value of dedication—skills she knows will serve her long after her final whistle.
