Vinita High School sophomore Carson Osburn is already a two-sport varsity standout, but teammates and coaches say his impact goes well beyond Friday nights and spring meets.
Osburn, a varsity track athlete and varsity football player for the Vinita Hornets, said competing in both sports has shaped how he carries himself on and off the field. “My sports have taught me leadership skills through tough challenges,” Osburn said. “As one of the team leaders, I am always ready for a new challenge and a chance to help someone in need.”
That focus on others is part of what he values most about wearing Vinita’s colors. Osburn said he takes pride in representing the Hornets alongside his teammates. “The best part about representing my high school, is the fact that I get to put out what my teammates and I have been able to accomplish,” he said.
In the classroom, Osburn points to his science teacher as a daily example of the kind of person he wants to be. “My favorite teacher is my science teacher Mrs. Kennedy; she is always kind and understanding,” Osburn said.
His biggest inspiration, though, comes from home. Osburn credits his grandfather, Danny, for guiding him through life’s ups and downs and keeping him grounded as his athletic career grows. “My Grandpa, Danny, is my inspiration in my life, he is always there to support me in my toughest times in life,” Osburn said. “He never fails to make me laugh and always has words of wisdom.”
Whether lining up on the football field or driving out of the blocks on the track, Osburn said he wants his legacy at Vinita High School to be defined by character as much as competition.
