Vinita’s Chris Pesich- Athlete Spotlight- Presented by Welch State Bank

Vinita High School’s football program is getting a jolt of energy from varsity player Chris Pesich, an outside linebacker and tight end who sees the Hornets’ future through the lens of chemistry, accountability and a relentless work ethic.

“What I like most about my team and teammates at Vinita is the strong bond we have built,” Pesich said. “It’s almost like a brotherhood and even though we’re coming off of a down year, we are super confident, and we are focused in together as one. No matter what challenges lie ahead, we are ready to conquer them together.”

Pesich embraces his dual role on the field but finds particular satisfaction on the defensive side of the ball. “I play outside linebacker and tight end. I enjoy playing outside linebacker because of the ability to make tackle for losses or even making 4th down stops,” he said. That edge shows up most clearly during summer workouts, where he believes the team’s mindset is setting the tone for the coming season. “I think our summer workouts have been full of determination, grit, and I feel like we are team that is eager to win. We have been putting in the work every day during the summer. We hold each other accountable as well. Everyone has their mind set on being successful during our workouts. Everyone on the team has a special bond and it shows, with both our offense and defense merging well together.”

Pesich credits his father as the guiding force behind his approach to football and life. “The person that inspires me most is my dad. He has taught me to be resilient in the hardest of times. He has showed me that even on sick days, or days you simply just don’t feel like it, you have to keep pushing and get to work. My dad pushes me to be the best version of myself. I’d also like to thank my coaches for pushing me towards success on and off the field.” That support system, combined with lessons from former teammate Bodee Carter, has helped shape his outlook on the game and its fleeting nature. “A former teammate that left an impression on me was Bodee Carter… He also taught me to love the game and enjoy it while it lasts because it will end sooner than you think… He taught me to soak the feeling of high school football in while it lasts.”

Film study and attention to detail are central to Pesich’s strengths. “I feel like the strength of my game is reading offenses and other players… Watching film is such an underrated aspect of the game. I also feel I have a sense of energy that can light up a stadium. I also have a drive and will to succeed like no other.” As he continues to grow at outside linebacker, he is already looking ahead to his academic future. “I would like to go to the University of Oklahoma and pursue a degree in Aerospace Engineering.”
