Leadership doesn’t always mean being the loudest voice in the huddle—it often comes through consistent effort and setting an example. For Vinita’s Trey Tanner, that’s exactly what he hopes to do as he enters another season with the Hornets. “My personal goals heading into the season would be trying to be a better leader on the team,” he said. It’s a mindset shift that shows maturity, especially for a player who already plays key roles on both sides of the ball.
With another offseason in the books, Tanner says the team’s preparation has taken a big leap forward. “I think the team has prepared better this offseason than last year’s. Our weekly workouts are more intense than last year’s,” he said. That increased intensity has made a visible difference, especially in how teammates are pushing themselves to compete. “Our biggest improvement I’d say would be kids trying harder—even the ones trying to earn starting spots,” Tanner added.
As for team goals? Winning is on everyone’s mind, but the Hornets are focusing on the daily grind it takes to get there. “Trying to win more games, and if we keep putting in the work that we have been doing, I think we could have a good shot at that,” he said.
Tanner is one of the team’s most versatile contributors, playing quarterback on offense and strong safety on defense. His understanding of the game is what helps him make those in-game decisions look easy. “I’d say our football IQ is one of our team’s biggest strengths,” he said. “Counting numbers—how many are in the box and how many is not—is key when I’m reading a defense.” He adds that “lots of film time” is how he prepares to stay sharp.
Whether he’s calling the plays or anchoring the defense, Tanner keeps his approach simple: “Playing assignment football.” His mindset is grounded in consistency and effort. “I want to be known as a good leader, played hard, and an example for younger kids to follow.”
For Tanner, the game means more than just stats. “Getting game-winning interceptions my sophomore year that put us in the playoffs” stands out as his favorite memory in a Vinita uniform. And with a love for “classic rock” as his hype soundtrack, Trey Tanner is already building a legacy—on the field and beyond.
